Word of advice for the newly engaged on preparation for their wedding day: Plan within your means and get creative to save money. It is very possible to have a lovely wedding without spending beyond your means, and you will be glad for the peace of mind you will have afterward. We had to sacrifice some things on the front end, especially because I was still in grad school, but it was worth it. Save the money for your honeymoon; you can actually get some awesome deals on vacation rentals in the Caribbean and Mexico between April and July because it’s the off season.

How did you meet? Jay and I were both involved with an organization based in DC called Young African Professionals, but had never met. However we both ended up attending a networking event near Union Station set up by this group on a Friday night in May 2011.

The interesting thing is Jay almost did not attend this event because a friend of his was hosting her graduation dinner in Baltimore that same evening and I almost cancelled as well because I was dead tired from the work day. However we both ended up going with our own groups of friends. My friend arrived first, and struck up conversation with one of Jay’s boys.

Some time later, Jay says “I saw another lady walking into the restaurant that caught my attention, and I immediately thought to myself… ‘oh, that’s different’. She came looking put together but not overdoing it with a cocktail dresses, power suit and heels (the typical D.C. happy hour uniform). This was Crystal who happened to be joining her childhood friend, Blessing.”

We spoke briefly, but honestly I was so hungry I can’t recall what we spoke about, but apparently I made a good impression because Jay decided he needed to find a way to continue the conversation. Well, Jay and his friends convinced me and Blessing to go to another cafe where we could get some real food, which sounded great — but we were both were still pretty clueless about Jay’s interest in me.

We made our way to the other restaurant and chatted for a while and eventually Jay found an opening and asked me if I was single because he’d like to take me out. I stuttered a bit in saying yes because I definitely did not expect him to be that bold. But it was definitely refreshing. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but after several long, engaging conversations that following week, we went on our first date the following weekend, a Sunday brunch, which he planned beautifully!

Wedding Date: April 19, 2014 | Wedding Details: Location: Walker’s Overlook, Walkersville, MD – Theme: Rustic Vintage inspired Elegance | Wedding Color: Navy Blue and Blush Pink

Bridesmaid Count: 5 Bridesmaids or “Women of honor” as I called them 🙂

Bridal Gown Style: Vintage style dress from BHLDN - organza a-line wedding gown with embroidery throughout, capped sleeves and a single box pleat at the waist

Most unforgettable moments of your wedding day: Many beautiful moments, but I would say the top two were:

Our entrance to “Happy” – Each groomsmen had given his jacket to his partner bridesmaid to wear as they walked in and the men held each woman’s bouquet. When they all got to the floor they mad an archway for us to walk through. It was totally spontaneous but a lot of fun.

Our sunset photos out on the grounds of the farm — nothing but rolling hills as far as you could see.

Where did you get the style idea? We researched pictures offline. The style we achieved is called a loc- updo. Crystal and I tested sereval styles before deciding on our prefered style.

What products were used? The hair products used to achieve this style on Crystal were for loc maintenance. I used Nature’s Gate and Jane Carter Wrap and Roll Mousse to ensure the integrity of the style.
