Online Dating to Forevers | NaturalHairBride
Shaun and I had been dating for 6 ½ years when he proposed. He had planned for us to go to the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead (Miami) where we got a chance to tour the grounds and taste tropical fruit. It was around lunchtime so in my haste to leave and go for lunch, he asks if I want to look around the park some more. I respond “not really … do you?!?†I will be honest, I was ready for lunch, but he responded “yea, let’s walk around for a little.†I quickly talked myself down from the annoyance because he’s always so accommodating of me. We walk through this area with fresh herb and vegetables (a real treat for me bc I love herb and veggie gardens) and right beyond is the most beautiful pond/waterfall with gorgeous water lilies. I was in awe of this gem and took a few pictures. We were taking in the moment and Shaun, looking deeply in my eyes begins telling me how much he loves me, how much I mean to him and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. He gets down on one knee and takes out the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen, asking “will you marry me?†I froze. Blacked out, for just a moment. I recovered quickly and said, “yes!†Lunch was an afterthought by now, so we sat right there in the grass to share the moment together and with our family (via facetime)!

When did you and your fiancé meet?
Shaun and I were matched on eHarmony February 2009. To us, our meeting was a case of synchronicity. I had completed an unfulfilling 3-month subscription on the site with plans to return to “real world†dating and was surprised to see that my subscription auto renewed. I immediately turned off my “match†settings in hopes of getting a refund but a few days later I realized, I should give it one more month. I was matched with Shaun the day after I resumed by match settings. Shaun had only signed up for the site two days before we were official matched!
I was drawn to the sincerity of his profile. He was drawn to my appearance and intellect.
How will you wear your hair for the wedding?
I am not entirely sure – fortunately I have 9 more months to decide. ☺ Nonetheless, I love being natural and would love to find a style that captures my personality and adds an extra layer of special-ness for the big day.
How has NaturalHairBride influenced your styling decision?
To be honest, despite being a happy naturalista, I have felt some pressure to straighten my hair for the big day. In the media (and from others) I’ve been getting the subtle and not so subtle message that “elegance†and “romantic†are synonymous with long, straight hair. So much so that I have been searching for ways possibly create a straight hair look that could withstand the FL heat and humidity – hence my appointment with a stylist to try out a silk press. Finding Natural Hair Bride has reminded me that my curls are beautiful as they are and don’t need to be straightened in order to be “elegant.†My curls are not “too casual†or “too wild†for a special occasion. I am now embracing natural hairstyles that fit my personality and the theme of the event so I can feel more like me for the big day
How Did You Create Your Engagement Photoshoot Hairstyle?
-Pre-condition  (night prior) – unrefined coconut oil (click product for more info)
– Co wash – As I Am Coconut CoWash (click product for more info)
– Leave In conditioner – As I Am Leave-in conditioner (click product for more info)
– Styling Products – Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and the Curling  Gel Souflee (click product for more info)
I drench my hair and scalp with coconut oil either the morning (1-2 hrs depending on time) of or night before I wash and styled my hair. I follow with cowashing with the As I am Coconut Cowash. I than apply the As I am  Leave-in conditioner, part my hair in four or more sections and then detangle with my Denman brush. I loosely twist each detangled section before moving on the next. Once my hair is completely detangled I, one section at a time, apply a combination of the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and the Curling  Gel Souflee with my hand and then comb through with the Denman Brush for a thorough application and to help clump my curls. If need be, I may loosely finger coil sections that lack a coily curl pattern (i.e. for me, the back and side of my head). Once the styling product is applied throughout the whole head, I used my hair dryer with a diffuser attachment to dry my hair. While drying, I may tug on the hair gently, holding it elongated, to help with shrinkage. If need be, I reapply more of the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and/or Gel to smooth the edges.
