10 Wedding Destinations That Are Trending Up
A destination wedding can be a daunting idea. You have to rent a venue that you might not necessarily see in person first; you’ll be asking guests to travel perhaps more than they otherwise would; and of course things can get expensive rather quickly. That said, a destination wedding can also be a beautiful, memorable way to celebrate one of the biggest days of your life. And if you happen to find a perfect destination, it’s that much better.
What constitutes the perfect destination will vary from one couple to the next. If you happen to be looking for inspiration though, here’s a check-in on some wedding spots that appear to be trending up these days.
1. Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is one of the hottest travel destinations on the planet – to the point that the Croatian government is actually looking into ways to curb the tourist flow a little bit. That doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible, however, and you can’t do much better than a charming Old Town area on Mediterranean waters for a destination wedding. Plus, you’ll probably be checking off a bucket list item for a lot of your guests!
2. Puglia, Italy
Puglia was actually listed by a travel booking site as one of the trendiest wedding spots for 2018, and who are we to disagree? This is actually where Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel got married, which made it popular for a time, but it’s expected to tick up in popularity once more this year. As the article put it, Puglia offers the same gorgeous landscape and romantic atmosphere as Tuscany, but without the crowds and activity.
3. Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik was another destination mentioned in the post we quoted regarding Puglia – as well as one of the places that’s been trending up in the world in general for a few years. Luxury accommodations and beautiful scenery just make for the perfect surroudnings for an unexpected international wedding. Plus, there’s the possibility of getting married under the northern lights.
4. Bournemouth, United Kingdom
It may not sound particularly exotic or luxurious, but Bournemouth is essentially a resort town by the ocean on the southern coast of England, and it’s been mentioned around the internet as a popular 2018 travel destination. It’s a nice combination of active and tranquil, with pretty seaside views but also a nice nightlife scene – a great place for your guests to hang out.
5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Looking a little bit outside the box, we found a piece specifically on the best casino destinations for weddings. It’s an interesting idea, given these tend to be very impressive resorts and there’s a lot for guests to do. And one destination, the Hard Rock Hotel at Punta Cana, stood out. As casino resorts go, it’s the second largest in the Caribbean, and the surrounding Punta Cana area is renowned for pretty beaches and awesome amenities.
6. Cape Town, South Africa
South Africa in general is a lovely place to go, and some of the more remote areas (parks and nature preserves and such) have occasionally been brought up as terrific destination wedding locations. But it’s hard to beat a marriage in Cape Town also. It’s a vibrant, dramatic-looking city and you’d be hard pressed to find a place that didn’t have a gorgeous backdrop or surrounding area.
7. Ishigaki, Japan
Ishigaki isn’t exactly what you think of when you imagine a vacation in Japan. It’s one of the Yaeyama Islands out in the sea, and is effectively a Pacific paradise. Quiet bays, white sand beaches, clear waters, and outstanding resorts give you about all you could ask for.
8. Riviera Nayarit, Mexico
Riviera Nayarit is one of the lesser-known destinations on this list, but was mentioned on a travel site as one of the best places to get married this year. The site makes a nice case for places like this on the Pacific (rather than Caribbean) coast of Mexico, which is getting more notice as a destination. It’s a trending romantic getaway full of beautiful locales, and a perfect place for a quieter destination wedding.
9. New York, New York
New York is a busier place to have a wedding, as you might imagine, but you might also be surprised by how many venues there are, both indoor and out, that might take your breath away. Plus, it’s a major domestic and international travel hub alike, so if the destination appeals to you, it might also be easier for most of your guests to manage.
10. Marrakesh, Morocco
Marrakesh, Morocco (which you’ll sometimes see written as Marrakech) has been on trending travel lists for a few years now. It’s a gorgeous old city with a medieval Old Town leftover from the Berber Empire and streets full of dazzling mosques. Having become a major economic center within Morocco, however, it also has plenty of modern comforts and terrific places to stay. If your wedding crowd would appreciate an unexpected cultural experience, but one that still allows for a luxurious vacation, it’s definitely a place to consider.
